Hamphsire & Dorset

T

his is an area of England with gentle rolling hills, steeped in history back to the 11th Century. Winchester has a stunning Cathedral dating back to the 13th century, with additions built in the 14th century. Just north of Winchester is a lovely village sporting a little silk mill, which still uses traditional techniques for the weaving of the cloth.

Three gardens are worth a visit-Hillier’s Arboretum, Exbury Gardens and Hinton Ampner, all at their prime for flowers in the Spring and early summer. An absolute must for anyone who loves flowers.

Travelling south west from Winchester brings us into Dorset, a county bursting

with history, from the Iron Age, 10th century Abbeys with the nearby chalk cutting of a club-wielding warrior reckoned to be 1500 years old and castles with history going back to 975 BC. Stately homes of the 16th century are all so beautiful and the rolling chalk coast line must be some of the most beautiful in England.

We can visit a selection of the gardens connected to the large stately homes and check out a 10th century castle. Be prepared to experience some of England’s most interesting countryside, history and intriguing gardens.
